Frequently asked questions

1. Can you tell us about yourself?

This question can be tricky as it simply requires one to give a summarized version of who you are. Don’t go into detail on this one, as you may end up waffling. For instance, one may say he is an energetic young man with great communication and proficient reporting skills. I have 5 years of administration experience, with 2 years at supervisory level. This shows the interviewee that you have potential for growth, as you would have proved that you were promoted from doing general administration work to doing supervisory administration tasks. How hardworking, outgoing, or task-oriented are you? Also mention that in short.

2. Why did you leave your previous job?

A recommended answer may be that I have worked well at my senior role, and I am now looking for a more challenging role that allows me to utilize my skills and gain a new skill-set. This is an opportunity for me to grow with the company as I add value to the organisation in the area of ABC. Some reasons may be I was retrenched or laid off because of these reasons… Never badmouth about your current or former company, as it may disadvantage you. Recruiters would want to recruit candidates with a positive mindset for growth.

3. What are you doing currently?

Mention that, I value my work very much and I am not rushing to get just anything as I want to get something that fulfills and elevates me in my career. Henceforth, I am taking my time so that I get the right opportunity like this one. Currently, I am working on multiple projects on freelance bases where I am doing ABC whilst I am hunting for my golden opportunity. You may also highlight that you are pursuing education and specify the qualification that you are doing as it may add value to this organization. Never mention that you are just at home doing nothing as recruiters would want to recruit someone who is currently doing something.

4. What do you find more rewarding in your career?

I am someone who enjoys networking with clients, and this is my golden opportunity to sharpen my negotiation skills. Considering that I am someone who enjoys problem-solving, I will make sure that all clients are satisfied with my service at all times, and resultantly, this increases the profitability of the organisation through improved customer retention (this may be applicable to someone who is into customer service or sales and marketing).

5. What are your strengths?

I’m strong when it comes to multi-tasking, as I can do 2 to 3 tasks simultaneously; for instance, I can do cold calls while I am drafting a report and at the same time schedule my appointments in a diary. On this question, do not exaggerate responses or scenarios to the interviewer, as it may end up trapping you through follow-up questions.

6. What are your weaknesses?

Well, I had challenges in the past where I could not handle too much pressure at once, but I have since polished up my weakness as I now know how to prioritize my work when I have too much pressure to avoid being overwhelmed and making mistakes. This is quite a tricky question, hence you must not mention weaknesses that will end up crippling your capabilities or your abilities to deliver.

7. How do you see yourself 5 years from now?

This is an opportunity for you to market yourself to the recruiter. For instance you may say, In the next 5 years, I would have achieved my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) Degree, hence this will add value to the organisation through various concepts that i can employ to my role. I am also seeing myself having been promoted to a more senior role in this organization, and also contributing my knowledge to all the other departments. This will give you an upper-hand to the recruiter, as they already witness that you are really interested in their organization.

Conclusively, jobhunting is not an episode, but rather an on-going process which requires patience, hence you need to maximise on the interviews that come to you, and never miss a chance to avoid depression and losing confidence. Lastly, when you are asked if you have any question in the interview you may ask, “When am I going to start? Trust me, the response or rection from the recruiter will be overwhelming.
